My time with you has been a time of growth and fun. We have laughed and cried together. It has not always been easy, it has rarely been peaceful; but underneath, even on the most difficult days, I have sensed God’s strength and presence, and the deep joy that comes from participating in God’s work. I feel that God placed me here at a time in your life as a community when I was needed. God also knew that my work here would teach me much. I will miss you!; although please know this: I will always be a part of this church.
You are such a generous and giving congregation! Throughout these two years, I have been treated to notes of kindness and prayers, and surprise gifts of food or flowers. I was overwhelmed with the party you gave me, and the generous gift of the check. The money will make it easier to rest and clear my head between churches. Thanks to all of you who worked hard to create the wonderful going away party. I am usually offered a special coffee hour, but no church has ever given me testimony before!! Many thanks for everything.
As I leave, and get ready to serve Hyattsville Mennonite Church, I offer you the following words, lightly adapted from a 1513 Christmas letter attributed to Fra Giovanni Giocondo, priest and architect:
There is nothing we can give which we have not, but there is much that, while we cannot give, we can take.
No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take Heaven.
No peace can come to us in the future which is not hidden in this present moment. Take Peace.
The gloom of the world is but a shadow; behind it, within our reach, is joy. Take Joy.
Let us be together in the prayer that, for each and all of us, now and forever, the day breaks and the shadows flee away. Take Joy!
Love and blessings, Pat+
